American Akita
An american akita is the same as found in Japan as can be seen in photos of the dogs.
The first dog that was brought to the USA by Helen Keller in 1937 was a puppy but after the war the servicemen brought a big collection of dogs from Japan thanks to which the breeding of that pedigree began. That time these dogs were used not as guard dogs by the military.

American Akita -
photos, dogs
This is one of the largest dogs of the six Japanese spitz-dogs. They were used to hunt little fur-bearing animals and also such large ones as a bear, a boar and a deer. They were used in pairs for better effect. During the World War II that breed was almost extinct because people killed them for food and for coat.
